Welcome one and all to the 'Philippine Railway Historical Society' blogsite. This site was set up to share photos, historical pieces, comment and virtually anything else pertaining to transportation in the Philippines, with a special emphasis on rail. Occasional we vary from topic, but this is the less serious side of the hobby shining through - cause sometimes, in this miserable and uptight world, we just take ourselves a little too seriously.
Since 1999, the Philippine Railway Historical Society has regularly published items, FOR FREE, of railway interest on our PRHS Website. These include locomotive, rollingstock and transit updates, as well as our occasional magazine, 'Along Da Riles'.
Our interest base has grown over the years with our main Facebook railway group expanding to include groups interested in other Philippine Transport, modelling of Philippine transport and even a group for Philippine railfans interested in overseas railways.
If it sounds interesting, come join in the fun of the oldest, and most diverse, group dedicated to Philippine railways and other transport.
We look forward to meeting you.

If you have a question Philippine railway related, just drop us a line, maybe we can help.

DAVAO PENAL COLONY

Mindanao Philippines.

This absolutely fascinating photo was shared to the PRHS Facebook group by Reynante Bulaon, coming from the 'WW2 Radio' Facebook group.

Where they got it, or who even took the shot, is unknown.
The front vehicle looks like some locally made contraption, not unlike the BUDA car used by the 'Philippine National Railways. The carriage behind certainly appears to be a steam locomotive tender, possibly from one of the timber railways that existed on Mindanao.
Very little is known of this operation and we would very much like to hear from anyone else with further information.

NOTE: Appears to be a cut and paste copy of 'History of Davao' site above.

It is thought that the line would have taken the straight line to the left or right (maybe both) of the colony. Though this is not confirmed.

HONDAGUA (QUEZON, PHILIPPINES)

Part 2

Another selection of photos of this beautiful seaside yard and former station.
Hondagua remains a major location on the main south line to Bicol.
Track work trains are based here. It has a number of roads, a triangle that has been partly covered by illegal settlers and once served a large flour mill in the town.

One leg of the triangle follows the coastline here, joining with the south leg right near the blue silos of the 'Philippine Flour Mill.
Tracks appear to be all still intact, but covered up in parts by 'illegal' squatters.

Not many stations can lay claim to a view this beautiful .
Underneath the grass is the north leg of the Hondagua triangle.

Stay tuned for more Hondagua shots.

Image result for funny statistics

The other day, while going through the process of refreshing our PRHS blog as part of an overhaul of the group in general, I got to looking at the blog statistics.
It is an interesting look into where around the planet that people take an interest in what the PRHS does, as well as the Philippine railways in general.
Keep in mind that this does not reflect the first 60,000 viewers from the earlier platform we used prior to coming to Blogger.
Overall views  - 148176
Blogger views/statistical data - 88176

The following are the top 10 visiting countries.

Philippines - 36925
USA - 13187
Russia - 8658
Australia - 2342
United Kingdom - 1963
Germany - 1830
France - 1656
Ukraine - 1508
Canada - 1104
Indonesia - 851

No huge surprises there I guess. The Philippines was always going to be far out front, with the USA likely to be in second. Russia comes as quite a big surprise, especially how far away from the fourth contender, Australia, where the PRHS has been based for 20 years.
It is also interesting to note that Indonesia has popped into the top ten for views. This is the first time I have noted this and is likely helped along by the upcoming arrival of Indonesian built trains in the Philippines.

This is probably all quite useless trivia, but it may be of interest to those who like to see the worldwide interest that exists for the railways of the Philippines.
